Indonesian Mining & Infrastructure Holding Modernizes Fuel Management System with Secure AWS Cloud Architecture

About the Customer

The customer is a large Indonesian holding company operating across coal mining, infrastructure, and port services, with multiple subsidiaries and operational sites distributed throughout South Sumatra Province.

Fuel consumption is a critical operational component across the organization’s business units. The company relies on Fuel Management Systems (FMS) to monitor usage, control distribution, and support operational decision-making. As operations expanded, the organization required a more reliable, secure, and centrally managed platform capable of supporting multi-site environments while maintaining strong connectivity with existing on-premise systems.

Customer Challenge

Before initiating its cloud modernization journey, the customer relied on fragmented, site-based Fuel Management Systems (FMS) deployed independently at each location. This legacy approach introduced several challenges:

The customer required a secure, scalable, and centralized cloud-based Fuel Management System, while ensuring private connectivity between AWS and on-premise sites.

Partner Solution

PT Innovation Cloud Services (ICS Compute) designed and implemented a centralized Fuel Management System architecture on AWS, focusing on security, reliability, and operational simplicity.

The solution was deployed in the AWS Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Region to meet data residency and latency requirements.

ICS Compute designed a Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) with a layered network architecture, separating internet-facing components, application workloads, and data tiers. The Fuel Management System runs entirely in private subnets, while connectivity services are placed in controlled public subnets to support secure hybrid access and outbound connectivity. The design also allows future expansion of managed database services within isolated private network tiers.

To enable secure hybrid connectivity, a Site-to-Site VPN connection was established between AWS and the customer’s on-premise environment. Application access is restricted to private network paths only, ensuring that the Fuel Management System is not exposed to the public internet.

The core workload runs on Amazon EC2 instances sized based on expected production load, with a design target to keep CPU and memory utilization below 85% under normal operating conditions. This approach provides sufficient headroom for workload spikes while maintaining cost efficiency.

For data protection, AWS Backup is used to centrally manage and automate backups of EC2 instances. Backup policies are defined to support operational recovery requirements and simplify administration.

Operational visibility is provided through Amazon CloudWatch. ICS Compute implemented custom dashboards displaying key production metrics, including CPU utilization, memory usage (via CloudWatch Agent), and disk utilization, enabling the customer’s operations team to monitor system health and take proactive action when needed.
